Sump Pump Installation and Replacement in Jamestown, NY

Every interior drainage system ends at a pump. It is the one part that has to work during the storm, and the one part most likely to have been sized by guess.

The part of the system that does the work

A perimeter drain collects water. It does not remove any. Everything the drain gathers runs to a pit, and the pump in that pit lifts it out of the house and pushes it far enough away that it does not come back. If the pump is too small, it runs constantly and wears out. If it is the wrong kind, it clogs. If it loses power, the basement fills from the bottom up. Most of the wet basements we see in houses that already have a system are pump problems, not drain problems.

So we treat the pump as its own job, whether it is going in with a new french drain or replacing one that has been quietly failing for two seasons.

Sizing for this area, not for a catalog

Pump capacity is listed in gallons per hour at a given lift height. The numbers on the box assume an average house. Jamestown-area basements are not average. The clay soils along the valleys hold groundwater high against the foundation for weeks in spring and after a wet fall, and a house that gets water through the floor joint can deliver a lot of it to the pit in a short time.

We size to two things: how much water the drain actually brings in during a wet stretch, and how far up and how far out the discharge has to push it. A basement with a long perimeter drain and a discharge that climbs eight feet and runs forty needs a different pump than a small pit with a short run. Getting this right is most of the difference between a pump that lasts ten years and one that lasts three.

What goes into a system that lasts

The pit

Big enough that the pump is not cycling every thirty seconds, set at the low point of the drain so water arrives by gravity, with a sealed lid so the pit is not the source of the humidity in the basement. An undersized pit is the most common thing we find wrong with an existing system.

The pump

A submersible cast-iron pump for most basements here, because it handles the silt and the volume without overheating. A float that cannot hang up on the side of the pit. A check valve on the discharge so the water in the line does not fall back into the pit when the pump shuts off, which is what makes some pumps sound like they never stop.

The backup

A second pump on a battery, in the same pit, that takes over when the primary fails or the power goes out. This is the part that people skip and then wish they had not. The storm that brings the most water is the storm that drops the lines. A backup runs for hours on its own and, on the better units, texts you when it has had to. We recommend one on every system we install in this area.

The discharge

A line that leaves the house and ends far enough away, sloped away, that the water cannot find its way back to the foundation. With freeze protection, because a discharge that ices shut in February leaves the pump running against a closed pipe until it burns out. Where the line ends sometimes takes more planning than the pump itself on a tight village lot.

Replacement, and when it is not just the pump

A lot of what we do is straightforward replacement: the old pump out, a new one in, new float, new check valve, and a look at the discharge while the lid is off. That is a short visit. But a new pump in the wrong pit, or one fed by a drain that has silted shut, is a repair that will not hold. Part of every replacement is looking at whether the rest of the system is doing its job, and telling you plainly if it is not.

How do I know if my sump pump is failing?

The pump that fails in a storm usually gave warning first. Listen for it running longer than it used to, cycling on and off rapidly, making a grinding or rattling noise, or not running at all when the pit is full. A pit that stays high between cycles, or a musty smell that started recently, points the same direction. Pumps last roughly seven to ten years in regular use, and one that has been in since the house changed hands is worth checking before spring.

Do I really need a battery backup?

Around here, yes. The storms that put the most water in your basement are the same storms that take the power out, and a pump with no power is a hole in the floor. A battery backup runs a second pump for hours on its own. It is the single most common thing we add to a system that was otherwise installed correctly, and it is the difference between a wet spring and a dry one about once every few years.

Can a sump pump handle the water table around Jamestown?

A properly sized one can. The valley soils hold water high against foundations for weeks in spring and after a wet fall, so the pump has to be matched to that volume, not to a national average. We size for the amount of water the drain system actually delivers and for how far up and out the discharge has to push it. An undersized pump runs constantly and dies early.

Where does the water go once it is pumped out?

Out through a discharge line that has to end somewhere the water cannot find its way back to the foundation. That means far enough from the house, sloped away, and not into a spot that turns into a pond. In this climate the line also needs freeze protection, because a frozen discharge in February is a pump running against a closed pipe. We plan the discharge before we set the pump.

Can you replace just the pump in my existing pit?

Usually, if the pit is sound and sized right. A lot of replacements are exactly that: a new pump, a new check valve, a new float, and a look at the discharge line while we are there. If the pit is too small for the water it gets, or the drain feeding it is silted up, we will tell you that too, because a new pump in a bad pit is a short-lived repair.
